Christmas in July...
By ESB on July 7, 2009.

Christmas every day at my house!

FedEx’s early morning delivery of THE MAGICIANS BY Lev Grossman nearly sent me over the top.  Laura Miller, a NYTimes book reviewer and one of the founders of Salon.com, recommended this book on NPR’s Brian Lehrer Show last week, and David Martin at Vintage kindly expedited it here.

Then late this afternoon, Russell Perreault, Director of Publicity at Random House, sent me a package.  Russell knows what I like, so I always pay close attention to what he sends, and I usually put his books on top of the stack.  Obviously, I haven’t read any of them yet, but if Russell recommends them, you know that they’re going to be fiction of the highest order. Here are the three novels in today’s package:

DECEMBER by Elizabeth Hartley Winthrop, will be published on July 14th. The main character is an eleven year old girl who inexplicably stops speaking. Russell  said that “DECEMBER paints an unforgettable picture of a family reckoning with a bewildering crisis, and of a critical month in the life of a bright, fascinating girl, locked into the isolation of her own making and from which only she can decide to break free.”

About ATTACHMENT BY Isabel Fonseca, Russell said that it is “a gracefully written novel about aging, parents and children, and the mystery that even married partners can be to each other.”  This book was published last month, so it’s still new.

I remember loving Nancy Clark’s THE HILLS AT HOME, so I was so pleased to see the latest installment in her HILLS series.  It’s called JULY AND AUGUST  and it’s scheduled for a July 14th publication date.

I’ll let you know what I think of these books as I read them, and if you read any one of them, please let me know what you think.
